Migration extent and potential economic impact of the fall armyworm in Europe

A new study, led by partners from Wageningen University and Agroscope, was recently published in Scientific Reports, entitled "Migration extent and potential economic impact of the fall armyworm in Europe". The study highlights serious economic threats to European agriculture posed by the invasive fall armyworm, which was first detected in Europe in 2023.

Using bioclimatic modelling, researchers mapped the climatic suitability for permanent and seasonal populations of the pest across Europe, revealing significant risks for southern European countries. Under a worst-case scenario, annual grain maize gross margin losses could reach up to €546/ha, exceeding €900 million annually across EU Member States. The study further emphasizes the urgent need for immediate action, recommending enhanced pest surveillance, integrated pest management strategies, and regional cooperation to effectively limit the spread and economic impact of this invasive pest.
